Michael Craig-Martin was born in 1941 in Dublin and grew up in the United States. He studied from 1961 to 1966 at Yale University before moving on to England. He has lived in London since 1968 where, as a tutor at Goldsmiths College of Art, University of London (1971–2000), he oversaw the development of numerous up-and-coming artists – including Angela Bulloch, Thomas Demand, Liam Gillick, Damien Hirst, Gary Hume, Sarah Lucas, and Julian Opie. Since the 1970s Craig-Martin has been regarded as one of the leading representatives of conceptual art in Britain.
The exhibition consists of a series of sixteen paintings in highly varied formats, which have been devised and painted specially for Haus Esters. They all show everyday objects that can be found in domestic settings – personal articles like a man’s shirt, a woman’s shoe, a bicycle helmet, an iPhone – along with objects that are normal items in the home: chairs, a lightbulb, a padlock, a soup can. As such, the artist returns Museum Haus Esters to its original function as a residential home. With the presentation of these objects, he allows the viewer to imagine the villa as something living and inhabited. This also extends beyond the interior of the building into the garden, where Craig-Martin has installed two over-sized transparent sculptures – a fork and a garden gate. By including not only historical objects in this visual inventory – such as two chairs designed by Mies van der Rohe – but also present-day items such as an iPhone, a laptop and an energy-saving lamp, the artist has simultaneously created an elongated time-line for life in the villa.
